But, what if you're in a terrible accident and have a long recovery ahead of you or a loved one dies? These life-altering situations bring life to a standstill. You can't think about anything, let alone homeschooling the kids.
You're in a crisis.
Last October my father fell ill and passed away. The furthest thing from my mind was homeschooling. I had children who needed me, a family who needed consoling and a funeral to plan.
Our homeschool didn't go according to plan for weeks and that's ok.
Keep It Simple
Homeschooling through a crisis is possible, take it day by day and do what you can, be flexible. Don't worry about being behind, that's just added stress. Academics can happen, but they'll look different. If all you can manage is reading a few pages from a book or watch PBS or play some board games, then you did enough. Every little bit counts. What matters most is being together.
Rely On Others
Don't be afraid to ask or accept help. I'm always reluctant to ask for and accept help when it's offered (I'm working on it!), but this time around I was so blessed to have friends who would drive across the state for me and take care of my children.Focus On What's Important
I was right where my children and family needed me to be. My girls were able to read to their grandfather in his final days. I was able to talk to him, hold his hand. My stepmother had company and laughter fill her home. The life lessons that were taught while we were moving through this together are precious. No curriculum can teach that! The books will still be there when you're ready.
Ease Back Into It
When you are able, you can add a little more to your day. Our homeschool didn't really get "back on track" and we did not finish any curriculum. We kept our days simple, we did what we could and it was enough.Trust in God
From beginning to end keep an open line of communication going with God through prayer. Know that His comfort, guidance, and strength will get you through. Take time to be still in His presence and let His peace wash over you.If you need some more encouragement check out these articles
